Albert Edward Jones, Age 20

Private, 16826, 5th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

Albert was born in Madeley, but at the time of his enlistment was living with his wife Mrs J Jones at 17 Holly Hedge, Little Dawley.

Albert had enlisted in Ironbridge, in early January 1915 and landed in France on 09/06/15 and posted to 5/K.S.L.I. He was wounded around 25/09/15 at Bellewaarde Ridge, Ypres and wounded again bout 16th-22nd March 1917.

He died of wounds received at the Battle of Arras on the 11th of May 1917 and these wounds could have been received at any point from the 3rd May when the Battalion occupied Ape Trench and were told to hold at all costs, they were relieved on May 4th but continued to make up working parties to improve and alter the captured German trenches up to and past the time of Albert's death.

Albert's body is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery in Grave XVIII.M.15A he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, Victory and British War Medal.

Albert's father was John Jones and his mother was Elizabeth Jones, they were living at 48, High St, Madeley, in 1911, there is no record of Albert's wedding so maybe his wife was a common law wife?

On Albert's Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, there are these comments “At request of desists Fa (Father)”, “Although what appears to be a valid will exists in favour of miss J Jones the legatee was apparently non-existent”, Albert's Army pension was awarded to his mother at 17, Holly Road, Dawley.
